Kenya - East Pokot, about 300 km north from Nairobi, is one of the poorest districts of Kenya. The volcanic land is dry. It doesn't give much even in ordinary time, now, with the terrible drought and famine that struck the whole Africa's Horn, people are suffering for starvation.
Here, in an area with no towns, and even no villages, about 130.000 people live in a very bad and poor condition (the level of illiteracy is 90%).
This is the first district where the aids of Sant'Egidio have been given: 9 tons of corn, delivered bya delegation of the Communities of Rome and Nakuru.
People inlong queues wlaked for hours to gather in front of the rural churches of Kositei and Chemsik, where helps have been distributed to about a thousands families.
Children, women, men with and indefinite age, faces and bodies marked by poverty, have been patiently waiting to get the sack of corn that will be useful to the family for several days, careful not to waste even one only, precious, grain.
It's important to support this humanitarian action of the Community, to continue helping the people struck by the drought, here and in other districts of Kenya.
We are raising funds and ask contribution to all.

She is currently being held on death row in Tabriz Prison, north-west Iran, and faces imminent execution. Around July 7th , following international protests, officials in Tabriz asked the head of Iran’s judiciary to agree that her sentence of stoning to death be converted to execution by hanging.
On 10 July, the head of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights said that her case would be reviewed, although he affirmed that Iranian law permits execution by stoning.
On 14 July Sajjad Qaderzadeh, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s son, was summoned to Tabriz’s Central Prison, and is believed to have been questioned by Ministry of Intelligence officials who possibly threatened him not to give further interviews about his mother’s case.
It is clear Sakineh remains ingrave risk… PLEASE sign this petition which calls on the Iranian authorities to clarify her current legal status, demands that the authorities enact legislation that bans stoning as a legal punishment, and eliminates other forms of the death penalty for “adultery” such as fogging or imprisonment.

The European Commission has just approved growing genetically engineered (GE) crops in the EU for the first time in 12 years, putting the agri-chemical industry's profits over safety concerns and public interest. The vast majority of Europeans are against GE crops.
A new initiative allows 1 million EU citizens a unique chance to make official requests of the European Commission. Let's build a million voices for a GE free future and call for a moratorium on GE foods in Europe. Sign the petition below and spread the word. Don't forget to include your address so that all of our signatures count for the citizens' initiative.
Greenpeace is working together with Avaaz who are kindly collecting all the details for this initiative. Avaaz will only be using your information for this petition and will not be subscribing you to their e.mail list.
To the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso:
We call on you to put a moratorium on the introduction of GE crops into Europe and set up an independent, ethical, scientific body to research the impact of GE crops and determine regulation.
